While conducting research for our book Assembly Required we stumbled upon fragments of wallpaper and stained glass from Old Westminster Palace - the primary residence of English monarchs from the 11th century until a devastating fire hit in 1512. The remainder of the gothic style palace remained until 1834, when an even larger fire swept through the site.
That was then replaced by the neo-gothic revival Palace of Westminster that still stands today - the home of British democracy.
While the original Old Palace of Westminster, where these fragments are taken from, wasn't intended to be used by parliamentarians from the 13th century the site did become the meeting place of the House of Lords and Commons - with the latter taking over the former St. Stephen's Chapel in the 16th Century.
As such, and given the building's history at the beginnings of British democracy, we thought it fitting to use these fragments somewhere. It didn't make sense within Assembly Required, as that book focuses on modern legislative buildings, but here on a dedicated poster it makes a whole lot of sense.
Note: These fragments are scans of the original materials taken from across the Old Palace of Westminster estate. Some of the sections were also colour corrected and tweaked to better fit the colour pallete of the poser design.
